John Cohen 1932-2019

John Cohen, who passed away Monday, was a national treasure. He was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers, a photographer, filmmaker, author, and educator. His enormous talent was dedicated to discovering, revitalizing, and disseminating traditional American music. He was also a great gentleman.

I last saw John at an afternoon symposium on Bob Dylan at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York on April 21, 2017 during an exhibition of Ted Russell’s photographs of a young Bob Dylan. That exhibition was also a launch for Bob Dylan NYC: 1961-1964 by Ted Russell and Chris Murray (Rizzoli). Here is a link to a video of that symposium featuring John Cohen.
