I was thrilled to see Ted Russell’s photographs in Bob Dylan’s just-released Through The Open Window 1956-1963, the latest from his Bootleg Series. Dylan’s landmark concert at Carnegie Hall in 1963 is included in its entirety for the first time in this collection.

There are two versions available, one with 2 CD’s and a booklet, or a box set with 8 CD’s and a book. Vinyl is also available. Six of Ted Russell’s photographs of Dylan are included in both CD versions.

The liner notes written by Sean Wilentz that accompany the release illuminate Dylan’s music and pastimes from that period. Hats off to Geoff Gans’ design and art direction, and to archivist Parker Fisher.

Ted Russell, the last of the legendary LIFE photographers, known for its groundbreaking photojournalism, is the first professional photographer to document Dylan, starting in 1961 and again in 1963 with James Baldwin and again in 1964 at his apartment on 4th street in N.Y.C. This Sunday, January 11th, is Russell’s 96th birthday! Happy Birthday Ted!!

Ted Russell is represented by Govinda Gallery.
