Approaching the Entry Falls of Jirijirimo
October 1943

Located just below the mouth of the Rio Kananari, Jirijirimo is the most dangerous of the rapids on the Rio Apaporis. In the stillness of the morning, Schultes witnessed for the first time the great plume of mist that rises from the water and hangs ominously above the cataracts. As the river narrowed, funneling half a mile of water toward a chasm sixty feet across, he heard the dull thunder of the entry falls, a hundred-foot wall of water lerading to the gorge.
