Chris Makos is a cornerstone of Govinda Gallery’s photography program. His exhibition, Christopher Makos: Photographs in 1981, was our first ever contemporary photography exhibition. Since then, Makos has had seven solo exhibitions at Govinda Gallery, and his work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions at Govinda as well.

Govinda Gallery published two portfolios of Makos work’, Icons and Man Ray. His photographs of the Rolling Stones are in my first photography book, Rolling Stones 40×20 (Billboard Books, 2002).

Moreover, Chris became, and remains, one of my closest friends for four decades. He introduced me to numerous other visual artists, including Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. He had me join him on junkets as his ‘art-dealer,’ including trips to Puerto Vallarta, Houston, Miami Beach, and Dallas, among others, while he was working on his photo columns for Interview magazine.

He also took me with Andy Warhol to more dinners, art openings, parties, night clubs including Studio 54, and shopping trips than I can count. Makos expanded my outlook on art and life.
