Happy Birthday Jimi Hendrix!

My favorite photo shoot of Jimi Hendrix remains Gered Mankowitz‘s session in his studio at Mason’s Yard in London in 1967. The photograph above is from that shoot.

The Experience: Jimi Hendrix at Mason’s Yard by Gered                                                                             Mankowitz

All the photos from that session can be seen in Gered’s book The Experience: Jimi Hendrix at Mason’s Yard from Insight Editions, a publishing company I co-founded in 2002.

Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, a friend of Mankowitz, wrote the forward to the book. Bill talked of seeing one of Hendrix’s first shows at the Bag O’ Nails Club in London with Donovan, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, The Small Faces, The Animals, and other great British musical artists of the time. He wrote, “Hendrix’s music personified the changing, adventurous sounds of the time. Gered Mankowitz was there with the rest of us, and captured a bit of the man and the moment in his photographs.”

Gered Mankowitz’s photos are available through Govinda Gallery.
