Maybe I should fuel-up the ‘Lisa Marie’…

On April 20 the Savannah Morning News published an editorial cartoon by Mark Streeter that depicts Elvis in heaven reading a headline in the newspaper about the Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer exhibition in Savannah at the Telfair Museum.

Elvis muses that maybe he will “Fuel-up the Lisa Marie” and see if Wertheimer and Museum of Modern Art curator Kirk Varnedoe, now both in heaven with Elvis, would like to fly down to Savannah to see the ‘Boy King’ exhibition. Kirk Varnedoe’s brother Gordon is also depicted in the cartoon as Batman, a persona taken on by Gordon during St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah and on other special occasions. The Elvis at 21 exhibition is “dedicated to the memory of Kirk Varnedoe, a devoted Elvis fan” who also admired Alfred Wertheimer’s photographs of Elvis. The Varnedoe’s were born and raised in Savannah. One of the galleries at the Telfair museum where the exhibition is being held is named the Kirk Varnedoe Gallery.

Thanks to Mark Streeter for a wonderful cartoon. This is the first exhibition of Alfred Wertheimer’s extraordinary photographs of Elvis since Wertheimer’s passing away. The exhibition continues at the Telfair Museum through October 2.
