The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s current exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture, highlighting Punk Rock’s influence on fashion, has gotten a lot of media attention. Govinda Gallery held the first exhibition of photographs of Punk Rock called The Cool and The Crazy in October of 1996.

I went to the gala opening of the first music related exhibition for the Met’s Costume Institute in 1999 called Rock Style, organized with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Govinda Gallery had assisted Tommy Hilfiger in getting his book Rock Style (Universe, 2000) published. Both the Rock Style exhibition and the benefit for the Costume Institute were sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger. I was invited to the exhibition opening by Hilfiger, who had just puchased the entire exhibition of Gered Mankowitz’s photographs of the Rolling Stones that I had organized in 1998. Hillfiger had sponsored the Stones tour that year, No Security, and loves Rock and Roll.

Here are some photographs from that opening night taken by Govinda Girl Sueraya Shaheen, as well as the invitation card from the Rock Style gala and exhibition launch.
